-Online Lotto Forum and Online Lotto Guide-

Lotto is one of those gambling games that governments have recognised as a way to bring in extra revenue. The common national lottery game (also known as lotto) picks 6 numbers from 49. Choose the correct 6 in any order and you win the jackpot. Since there are 13,983,816 different combinations, the chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 13,983,816. There are normally other smaller prizes too for guessing 3 or more numbers but the overall payout percentage is still low.

Typically almost half of the revenue from sales is kept and not distributed out to players, leaving players with little more than a 50% return. This is the lowest payout of all the gambling games (almost every casino game pays out well over 90%).

Some intellectual types will trot out the same argument that you can't win and there is no point in playing but this is absurd. Firstly, the cost is usually very low to take part, and the jackpot prize is massive in comparison. You probably won't miss the cost of a ticket so anything you win can be seen as a bonus.

There are times when it is mathematically a good bet. If the jackpot rolls over (when there are no winners the previous time) it can accumulate and reach a point where the chance of a winning ticket more than covers the cost of the ticket. The only caveat is that if more than one person wins the jackpot, the prize is then shared equally among the winners.

This brings me to the first tip when you choose your numbers. You should choose numbers and combinations that are least likely to be picked by other players so that the jackpot is less likely to be split if you win. This means avoiding common birthday numbers or dates and picking at least one high number. All number combinations are just as likely to win as any other so try to think of a combination no one else would think of. According to physics, there is no way you can influence the numbers or predict them so don't think too hard about it. Don't pick 1,2,3,4,5,6 because it is actually quite a common choice!

The second tip is not to pick too many choices. After all, only one of the combinations can win the jackpot. There are other small wins you can make but since the payout percentage is low overall ('wheeling' techniques won't increase the payout percentage either), there isn't too much point in spending a lot of money on lotto tickets, even though it will greatly increase the odds of winning the jackpot. The chance of winning is so remote that you can't be confident of winning, no matter how many tickets you buy (unless you buy millions). It's unlikely that anyone on your street has ever won a national lotto jackpot and just think how many tickets people living there have bought since the lotto began.

The third tip is to choose random numbers each time. It makes no difference to your chances but just think how gutted you'd feel if you forgot to enter your numbers one week and they came up! It takes less effort to pick the same numbers each time but only do this if you have a way of entering the same numbers regularly without fail (online lotto sites will do it automatically).

The final tip is to buy a ticket. It's good to have a dream. It is unlikely to happen but it may do the next draw or maybe never. Even if you buy several tickets a week, you are unlikely to win the jackpot in your lifetime so remember it's only a dream!

Now to the important points on the fairness of the games. When playing governmental lotteries, you can have a high degree of confidence that the game is fair. You can often purchase tickets for these games safely online. However, many gaming companies have their own lotteries, some with much higher than normal claimed payouts. With these there is a chance that the games are not fair. The main cheating method would be players playing for the company and winning. There are quite a few free lottery games online which means all you will spend is a bit of your time (the free ones often require you to do something). We plan to have our own free game here at some point in the future which will be absolutely fair!

About Our Network

I have been keeping up with the online gaming industry ever since I started playing online casinos in 1999. I set up FairCasinos.com in 2003 primarily for information purposes (there weren't any ads at all in the forum and the homepage was similar to what it is now). We have now branched out with these other related sites. You can count on us telling the truth about gaming sites and we 'blacklist' many gaming sites that other portals do not (such as the Party Gaming and 888 sites). I have been very disappointed about other so called 'watchdog' sites that tend to side with the gaming company in disputes.

We now have many features, including blogs and social networking and a single forum registration will work for every site in the network. We have only just launched the others in the network, which include: FairCasinos.com (main site), FairBingos.com, FairBookies.com, FairLottos.com, FairPokers.com and FairSkillGames.com. I've been using the editorial 'we' here as this has always been me on my own. This is why the sites have been set up to allow a lot of content to be added by the forum members (including updating historical information and databases) if they have the knowledge, since 90% of my playing experience and knowledge is with online casinos with the rest mainly being sportsbooks and poker and a tiny amount of bingo and lotto. There is a lot of useful information that other players or people in the industry have that I may not know of and many people have more information on the other types of online gaming other than the ones I'm experienced in. There is also a limited amount I can work on at one time and recently I've only been concentrating on the technical aspects of the site.

Please note that the three Online Gaming Guides linked to on the left are some of the best in terms of providing information but the online gaming sites they recommend are not always good ones. We only recommend reliable ones with no unresolved issues on this site and any from external links are not endorsed.
